We spend a lot of time researching things to nourish our bodies through the foods we eat, why don’t we take the time to research the products we use on our skin as well? Beauty and skincare are massive industries that pump out products quickly – and it isn’t always obvious that many of these products are full of chemicals. What you put on your skin can be just as important as what we put into our bodies as anything you put onto your body will also be absorbed in! In the past few months I’ve started making some fantastic beauty products at home – I’ll share with you today, a Coconut Sugar Scrub. It’s really easy to make, smells delicious and is free from any harsh chemicals.
As with many women, I had a ton of chemical full products in my drawers – make up, skin care, hair care etc. It can take time to make the switch over to natural and plant based products – but there are some awesome brands out there that work just as well (or honestly, better) than what you’re using now! To be cost effective, I did try to use up everything I had first, and when things ran out I did some research and found alternatives. There are lots of options out there, and more are coming up all the time as the demand moves to vegan, cruelty free and natural products.
Aside from hair products and make up, it’s easy to make some of our favourite beauty products at home. This coconut sugar scrub I’m sharing today is a wonderful exfoliant. It leaves your skin soft and incredibly moisturized since the main ingredient is coconut oil! I love using the scrub as a shave cream – helps reduce razor burn and leaves your skin super smooth. A note of caution when using this – it will make your shower slippery! So make sure you have a grippy mat or just be careful – if it makes your skin that smooth, it’ll make your shower smooth too!
The best part about this scrub is that it’s only 3 ingredients! That’s right! So simple. Using an electric mixer – whip equal parts white granulated sugar and coconut oil (solid) until it’s silky smooth. Here you can play around a little, add 3-4 drops of your favourite essential oil. I use lavender, but I’ve tried citrus or even vanilla extract! Whatever scent you like best. Once it’s all mixed together transfer it to a small jar with a tight fitting lid – and keep in your shower! It’ll smell delicious and work wonders.
