I know I spend a lot of time researching things to nourish my body through the foods I eat, but it’s easy to forget about taking that time to research what goes on my skin as well. Beauty and skincare are massive industries that pump out products quickly, and it isn’t always obvious that many of these products are full of chemicals. What you put on your skin can be just as important as what you put into your body. It takes just 26 seconds for products put on your skin to be absorbed into your blood stream. I really enjoy making my own beauty products at home, and this is one of my favourites. This Coconut Sugar Scrub is easy to make and smells lovely.
As with many women, I had a ton of chemical full products in my drawers – make up, skin care, hair care etc. It can take time to make the switch over to natural and plant based products, but there are some awesome brands out there that work just as well (or honestly, better) than what you’re using now. To be cost effective, I did try to use up everything I had first. Then when things ran out I did research and found alternatives.
There are lots of options out there and more are coming out all the time as the demand is moving to vegan, cruelty free and natural products.
This coconut sugar scrub is a wonderful exfoliant. It leaves your skin soft and incredibly moisturized since the main ingredient is coconut oil! I love using the scrub to shave – it helps reduce razor burn and leaves my skin super smooth.
A note of caution when using this – it will make your shower floor slippery! So make sure you have a grippy mat or just be extra careful – if it makes your skin that smooth, it’ll make your shower smooth too!
The best part about this scrub is that it’s only 3 ingredients! That’s right! So simple. I use an electric mixer and whip equal parts white granulated sugar and coconut oil (solid) until it’s silky smooth. Here you can play around a little, add 3-4 drops of your favourite essential oil. I use lavender, but I’ve tried citrus and vanilla, both were divine! Whatever scent you like best. Once it’s all mixed together transfer it to a small jar with a tight fitting lid – and keep in your shower! It’ll smell delicious and work wonders.
